Croatia will surprise many

The weakest team of Group B, and Euro2008 for that matter, are hosts Austria. It is difficult to see them make any mark on the tournament, especially in light of their dismal preparations for Euro2008. Germany are the obvious favourites to go through, and Croatia will probably follow them.

Poland should put up a fight, but Croatia have a more capable team. Coach Slaven Bilic has inculcated a winning mentality in the side, and with exciting players like Luka Modric and Eduardo da Silva, Croatia will be confident of going through to the quarter-finals.

Austria vs Croatia: Croatia should have too much for the Austrians. Their neat passing game in midfield, coupled with the predatory Eduardo da Silva up front will prove decisive.
Prediction- Austria 0-2 Croatia.

Germany vs Poland: One of the most attractive ties of Euro2008. Though Germany are undoubtedly superior to their opponents, the history between the two nations will spur Poland on. Indeed, the Polish ran the Germans very close during the last World Cup, with only a last-gasp German goal sealing their fate. It may be close this time, but ultimately the Germans’ speed and skill will be too much for Poland. Prediction- Germany 2-0 Poland.

Croatia vs Germany: Though Croatia are very capable of upsetting the Germans, the most likely outcome is a German win, which will seal their progression to the next round. But this is probably the most evenly balanced game in the group, so if Michael Ballack or Miroslav Klose have an off night, Croatia may well pounce. Prediction- Croatia 1-3 Germany.

Austria vs Poland: Poland will look at this game as a guaranteed three-pointer. As hosts, Austria do have a chance, but Poland should prevail. Prediction- Austria 1-3 Poland.

Poland vs Croatia: Many see this is a relatively even match-up, but Croatia have more quality in their side. Though Poland are led by a very competent coach in Leo Beenhakker, they will find Bilic’s charges too good. Prediction- Poland 0-2 Croatia.

Austria vs Germany: No contest even if Germany rest their players. Prediction: Austria 0-3 Germany.
